The egg price in Pakistan is usually quoted per dozen in retail market reports, while some traders quote the cost of a full tray or a carton. The rates shown above are linked to individual market observations and should be read with their city, unit and observation date. A price recorded in Lahore is not automatically the price charged by every shop in Karachi or Peshawar.

How to read the egg rate per dozen and per egg

A dozen contains 12 eggs. To estimate the cost of one egg from a quoted dozen rate, divide that rate by 12. For example, a dozen priced at Rs. 264 works out to Rs. 22 per egg; this is an illustrative calculation, not a claim about a current national rate. Retailers may round single-egg prices, and the final bill can differ from a straight division.

Trays often hold 30 eggs, but shoppers should confirm the actual count and packaging instead of assuming that every carton or tray has the same quantity. A 30-egg tray equals two and a half dozen. When comparing a tray offer with a dozen offer, calculate the per-egg cost on both and account for damaged or missing eggs.

Why egg prices differ between cities

Egg prices can move with local wholesale supply, transport expenses, flock output, seasonal demand and the conditions under which products are distributed and stored. These influences do not mean that every city moves in the same direction on the same day. A government-notified district rate, a statistical city average and a specific shop quotation are three different types of information.

For a documented comparison, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) publishes weekly price observations for essential commodities across its selected markets. Punjab’s Food Safety & Consumer Protection Department separately posts district-level notified commodity prices. Use the latest dated record for the relevant place; do not combine figures from different weeks as though they were simultaneous.

Retail eggs, wholesale eggs and specialty packs

Listing type What to compare Common buying issue
Retail chicken eggs Dozen price, locality and date Single eggs may be rounded in price
Wholesale / bulk eggs Actual count, grade and minimum order Delivery, breakage and cash terms vary
Tray or carton Number of eggs and effective unit cost Not every package contains the same quantity
Branded or specialty packs Pack size and product description Not directly comparable with ordinary loose eggs

Size and grading deserve attention because smaller and larger eggs are not identical products. A supplier’s grade or size claim should be checked on the label or invoice; do not assume that a quoted price refers to a standardized size unless it says so.

How to check a fair local egg quotation

First, identify the city and the date of the reference price. Next, ask the seller whether the rate is for a dozen, one egg, a tray or a crate. Inspect eggs for cracks and obvious leakage, and compare the actual count with the advertised pack. If buying for a bakery or restaurant, ask whether the wholesale quotation includes delivery, breakage allowances, minimum order size and any packaging deposit.

For households, buying the least expensive tray is not always the lowest-cost choice if eggs cannot be used while they remain in good condition. Keep them according to the seller’s handling advice, avoid unnecessary temperature changes, and follow local food-safety recommendations when storing and cooking eggs.

How to verify the latest reported prices

The most useful price check comes from two perspectives: a dated market report and a real quotation from a nearby shop. The PBS price-statistics portal explains its weekly observations. The Punjab notified-rates page provides district information for many Punjab locations. Neither automatically guarantees the selling price at every retailer.

Questions buyers ask

How do I calculate the price of one egg?

Divide a valid dozen quotation by 12 and check whether a shop charges a different rounded amount for single eggs.

Are wholesale egg rates the same as retail rates?

No. Wholesale deals may use different quantities, packing terms and delivery conditions. Always compare quotes on the same unit and quality basis.

Is one national egg rate valid for all Pakistan?

No. City quotations and district notifications can differ. Look at location and reporting date before treating a number as relevant to your purchase.
