The diesel price in Pakistan depends on the fuel grade. High-speed diesel (HSD), used in many commercial vehicles and diesel-powered engines, is not priced the same as light diesel oil (LDO). Pakistan State Oil lists an HSD price of Rs. 393.66 per litre and an LDO price of Rs. 275.24 per litre, effective 24 October 2026. These are dated reference quotations, not a promise that every retail pump will charge the identical amount after applicable freight. High-speed diesel and light diesel oil are different
Drivers often search for diesel without specifying which product they need. HSD is the normal diesel-pump reference for many road-going diesel vehicles. Light diesel oil is a separate petroleum product with different specifications and uses. The names do not mean that LDO is automatically suitable for a modern truck, bus, pickup or generator. Use the fuel grade stated by the engine or equipment manufacturer.

How to read a Pakistani diesel price quotation
First check the product name: HSD, high-cetane diesel, and light diesel oil should not be treated as the same item. Next check the effective date rather than the date a website was visited. Finally, check whether the quoted amount is an official reference, a company’s published pump rate, or a particular retailer’s price.
PSO states that its published petroleum prices exclude applicable freight from the shipping point to the retail outlet, while final pump prices include such charges. That explains why a nationwide reference should not automatically be turned into invented city-specific prices. Record the actual receipt amount if you are tracking expenditure for a fleet or business.
Estimating the cost of a diesel fill
To estimate a purchase, multiply the number of litres by the confirmed price per litre. At the dated reference HSD price of Rs. 393.66, 20 litres cost Rs. 7,873.20 before any pump-specific difference. The same calculation for 45 litres would be Rs. 17,714.70. These are arithmetic examples using the 24 October 2026 reference rate, not independently observed customer transactions.
If you are preparing a transport budget, keep the litre amount, receipt date and pump name beside each record. A single rate entry without a date can quickly make an expense log misleading after a government revision.
What influences the rate of diesel?
Refinery or imported product costs, applicable taxes and duties, transport, distribution and government pricing decisions contribute to a notified fuel rate. Government announcements may take effect more often than a traditional fortnightly cycle. The official effective date is therefore more important than assuming an automatic fixed schedule of changes.
Importantly, retail pricing and the commercial cost of running a diesel vehicle are not identical. A driver’s budget must also consider average kilometres per litre, traffic, idling, maintenance, tyre pressures, loading and the condition of the route. A small difference in consumption across a large monthly distance can outweigh a modest change in the pump rate.
Diesel versus petrol: compare actual running cost
A simple comparison based only on the posted prices per litre is incomplete. Diesel and petrol vehicles differ in purchase price, fuel efficiency, maintenance needs and suitability for particular workloads. Divide the verified pump price by the actual distance travelled on one litre to obtain a rough fuel cost per kilometre. Compare vehicles under a similar driving pattern, not just with manufacturer brochure claims.
